Are you familiar with the agglomerations and communities of communes in the Ardèche? Here’s a closer look at the public establishments for intercommunal cooperation (EPCI) in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

Agglomerations and communities of communes in the Ardèche

As of 1 January 2021, the Ardèche department has 19 public establishments for inter-municipal cooperation (EPCIs), with a population of 331,415 as counted in the same year:

  • 3 conurbation communities, one of which is interdepartmental with Drôme
  • 16 communities of communes, including 2 interdepartmental communities, one with the Drôme and the other with the Gard.
  • 335 communes in the Ardèche

What is an EPCI?

It is thetool used to implement cooperation between municipalities within a public inter-municipal cooperation body (EPCI).

Since the adoption of the territorial reform of 2010 and the law of 27 January 2014 on the modernisation of territorial public action and the affirmation of metropolises, EPCIs are:

syndicates of communes (law of 22 March 1890) ;
communities of communes (law of 6 February 1992) ;
urban communities (law of 31 December 1966) ;
agglomeration communities (law of 12 July 1999);
Syndicats d’agglomération nouvelle (law of 13 July 1983);
metropolises (Act of 16 December 2010 and Act of 27 January 2014).
