Transport networks and mobility in the Ardèche

The only department in France without a passenger railway station, the Ardèche is primarily a road-based department, even though there is no motorway running through it. Buses, roads and greenways provide plenty of opportunities to criss-cross the region from the Rhône valley to the Ardèche mountains.

Buses and coaches in the Ardèche

There are 2 types of bus and coach networks with different fares available in the Ardèche, organised by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in conjunction with the département:

  • The Cars région express network, with services between départements
  • The Ardèche departmental bus and coach network (formerly the Le Sept network)

There are also local buses, shuttles and transport on demand in areas of the département around the main towns, mainly organised by the communities of communes and conurbations.

Région express coaches (line X and TER)

Based on the former SNCF TER bus routes, the Cars Région express service provides links between the départements, towns and stations near the Ardèche.

So you can get to the Ardèche from :

  • The Drôme, via Valence town, Valence TGV station or Montélimar SNCF station
  • The Isère, from Péage-de-Roussillon station
  • The Lyon Metropolitan Area, via Lyon Perrache station.

Conversely, you can reach a number of SNCF stations in the Rhône Valley with the Cars Région Express from the following towns in the Ardèche:

  • Privas and Aubenas, to Valence TGV and Valence ville stations
  • Vallon-pont-d’Arc, Les Vans to Montélimar and Valence TGV stations
  • Annonay to Péage-de-Roussillon and Lyon Perrache stations
