The Ardèche in brief
The Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of south-east France, is a department with a varied and spectacular landscape, marked by deep gorges, volcanic plateaux and charming villages.
With a surface area of around 5,529 km2, the Ardèche is renowned for its unspoilt natural areas and rich historical heritage.
The département has a population of around 325,000, with Privas as its prefecture, which is the administrative centre but not the main tourist attraction in the region.
Annonay is the department’s largest town to the north, Aubenas and its catchment area the main urban centre to the south, Tournon-sur-Rhône and Guilherand-Granges in the Rhône valley are connected to the Drôme, and Saint-Agrève the only town with over 2,000 inhabitants on the Ardèche plateau, close to the Haute-Loire.
