Welcome to Vogüé

Overlooking the River Ardèche, the village of Vogüé combines heritage, a landscape sculpted by the waters and a tourist attraction in equal measure. Listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France*, the village offers a unique history and an atypical living environment, between the old town set into the cliffs, the castle dominating the valley and the busy market town of Vogüé Gare, which runs alongside the D579 between Aubenas and Vallon-Pont-d’Arc.

History of the municipality and the region

The heart of the village, with its ancient cobbled streets and arcades, was first documented in the Middle Ages. The site, naturally protected by the loop of the Ardèche and the limestone cliffs, attracted the de Vogüé family very early on, who built the village around a keep overlooking the river from the 12th century onwards.

The feudal structure gradually gave way, in the 18th century, to a more village-based life: the castle lost its political centrality when the chatelain moved to Aubenas and was sold as national property during the Revolution.

Bought out by the Vogüé family, they succeeded in reinvesting the ruined site and restoring the building in the 19th century, beginning a conversion into a house of hospitality and culture that preserves the memory of the lineage. The stories of this period, living perceptions of the valley, oscillate between attachment to past grandeur and management of a heritage to be redeployed.

Management was entrusted to the Vivante Ardèche association in 1971. Today, the château hosts exhibitions, concerts and tours, reviving its mission to open up and promote the region.

In the old village, the main street winds up a gentle slope, creating an amphitheatre-like layout typical of villages organised around a castle. The public squares, open under arcades or along the cliff face, preserve the memory of past activities: markets, village gatherings, even dungeons and modest chapels, such as the Gleyzette or Saint-Cérice chapels, which mark out the pedestrian routes and structure the village space. The commune of Vogüé has now been awarded the ” Villages de caractère d’Ardèche ” label*.

Vogüé Station: a historic railway junction

Vogüé Gare, which lies just beyond the gorges of the château, is another less touristy spot, but one of great importance to the commune.

Vogüé railway station has been an important part of the village’s industrial history since 1876, when it was opened by the PLM* company at the height of the development of the Ardèche rail network. Vogüé quickly became the centre of a railway star with four branches: the line between Le Teil and Alès and the line between Lalevade and Largentière, a strategic hub for passenger transport and above all for the transit of goods: stone from local quarries, coal from the Alès basin, ore from Largentière, water from Vals-les-Bains and agricultural produce.

At its peak, almost fifty people worked there, and the station was a hive of activity on a daily basis, with employees, passengers and villagers coming to watch the locomotives or dance at the Gustou café in the square*. The infrastructure included signal boxes, a weighbridge, a rotunda for turning the engines (by the horse Bijou* ) and a library on the platform.

In the 20th century, the car and road transport gradually competed with passenger traffic, which ceased entirely in 1969. Freight traffic continued until 1988, when the viaduct was closed for good. From 1992 to 2012, the Viaduc 07 association relaunched the site for tourist trips along the route between Vogüé and Montfleury, using a Picasso railcar on the Auzon and Ardèche viaducts.

Today, the station building has been converted into a nursery school and the railway line has been turned into a greenway for cyclists and pedestrians, the Via Ardèche*, linking Vogüé to Aubenas and neighbouring villages, offering new uses for soft mobility and discovering the railway heritage.

Human geography: population, housing and mobility

Vogüé has never been a town with a large population; on the contrary, the demographic curve is that of a classic Ardèche village, fluctuating with the agricultural seasons, crises (notably the rural decline of the 20th century) and, more recently, the boom in residential tourism around the River Ardèche.

The town had 864 inhabitants in 2006, rising to around 1,040 by 2023. The slight growth is due to the town’s attractive heritage and its role as a residential village on the outskirts of Aubenas. At the height of the summer season, the village welcomes thousands more visitors, who come for the charm of the village around the castle, the campsites and tourist residences and the proximity of the Ardèche gorges.

The tourist heart of Vogüé occupies a half-moon-shaped limestone promontory on the banks of the river downstream from the viaduct, with each alleyway following the topography: the light-coloured stone houses, squeezed together to protect themselves from the sun, play on the half-levels and alleyways.

Recent housing and the centre of day-to-day activities are located on the outskirts of the historic village, at Vogüé-Gare, preserving the heritage site and the panoramic view from the river. School facilities, health professionals and a number of communal services (town hall, post office) complete the picture of an active commune, geared towards welcoming tourists while retaining its rural roots and a dynamic economy throughout the year.

In terms of mobility, Vogüé’s proximity to Aubenas means that the whole of the southern Ardèche region can be accessed quickly via the D579, the D1 (Vallon via Lagorce) or the D103, which links up with the N102 trunk road. Vogüé has long been served by the train, and has now converted its railway viaduct into the Via Ardèche* greenway, offering a safe cycling link to Ruoms or Aubenas, and promoting both its industrial heritage and the use of alternative forms of transport.

Local economy: tourism, agriculture and services

Vogüé’s economy is largely based on its tourist numbers: with the Village de Caractère label, it attracts visitors every year in search of its living heritage, outdoor activities and friendly atmosphere.

Hotels, self-catering cottages, campsites, restaurants and small shops punctuate the high season, while winter sees a return to a more intimate community life, centred on annual economic activity, community initiatives and the preservation of the local environment.

Agriculture, which traditionally played a larger role (vineyards, orchards), is now marginal but still contributes to the mosaic of landscapes around the village. The market, entertainment and various cultural events (concerts at the château, summer festivals, exhibitions) provide a varied programme that meets the expectations of a loyal public who come to celebrate the art of living in the Ardèche.

Natural sites and adventure tourism

It’s impossible to talk about Vogüé without mentioning the river Ardèche, which carves out the village at its foot and then flows down into the gorges.

The nearby banks along the river are home to beaches, canoeing bases and picnic areas, making boating the great game of Ardèche summers: canoeing, swimming and fishing punctuate the days, while the adjoining cliffs and viaducts attract climbers, cyclists and hikers. The hanging gardens, clinging to the cliffs, act as a natural belvedere. Enjoy the view over the loop of the Ardèche, the limestone cliffs of Serre de la Vialle and, on a clear day, the Gras plateau.
The hiking trails lead to Balazuc, Rochecolombe, the Ardèche gorges and the villages of Saint-Montan and Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, each offering new viewpoints and a real experience of the Ardèche landscape.

The viaduct, rehabilitated as a greenway, also opens the way to soft mobility, complementing the departmental bus routes and panoramic roads.

Mobility & transport

The D579 departmental road runs through the commune, between Aubenas to the north and Vallon-Pont-d’Arc.

As far as transport is concerned, the departmental bus route E15 in the Ardèche serves the village between Aubenas and Avignon, and the regional coach route X76 brings you to Vogüé from the Rhône valley and the SNCF stations in the Drôme.
