Tournon in the Ardèche
Tournon-sur-Rhône is a commune in the Ardèche department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is located on the right bank of the Rhône, opposite Tain-l’Hermitage(Drôme), around 20 kilometres north of Valence. With just over 11,000 inhabitants, it is one of the main urban centres in the north of the Ardèche and plays an important economic, tourist and administrative role.
A little geography
The town is located in the lower Rhône valley, at a crossroads between the Hermitage and Saint-Joseph* wine-growing hillsides and the Vivarais hills. The Rhône forms both a natural boundary and a major traffic artery. The commune stretches from the banks of the river to the first heights of the Ardèche plateau. The climate is temperate with Mediterranean tendencies, with dry summers and relatively mild winters, influenced by the Rhône valley and the Mistral wind.

A touch of history
Tournon has a long history. Occupied since ancient times, the town really developed in the Middle Ages around its castle, the seat of an important seigneury. It became a regional stronghold, particularly from the 13th century onwards. During the Renaissance, the town embraced humanism and became home to a number of important educational institutions. Tournon also played a role in the religious conflicts that marked the Vivarais region.
A little economy
The local economy is based on several complementary sectors. Commerce, public services and craft industries dominate the town centre, while the outskirts are home to industrial estates. Tourism is an important driver, linked to the architectural heritage, the proximity of vineyards(Hermitage and Saint-Joseph appellations) and river cruises. Agriculture is still present, particularly in the form of specialised wine-growing on the surrounding slopes.
Living in Tournon
Tournon boasts a comprehensive range of services, including schools, sports facilities, a hospital, a media library and cultural amenities. It attracts a varied population, from long-standing residents to new arrivals looking for a semi-urban setting close to Valence or Lyon. It has a strong community fabric, with regular events focusing on music, wine and heritage.
