Limony in the Ardèche

Located at the northern tip of the Ardèche département in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the municipality of Ozon covers just over 7 km² and has a population of over 800. It lies between a wooded plateau, farmland and the shifting banks of the Rhône and its sometimes overflowing tributary, the Limony.

A little geography

Limony lies on the right bank of the Rhône, at an average altitude of 265 metres. The commune is bordered by the river to the east and the last foothills of the Massif Central to the west, offering a diversity of landscapes ranging from alluvial plains to wooded slopes and vineyards. This geographical location gives Limony an altered oceanic climate, influenced by its proximity to the Rhône Valley.

The area is criss-crossed by a number of major transport routes, including the D86 departmental road, which runs along the right bank of the Rhône and becomes the D1086 as it leaves the department to the north, a railway line dedicated to goods traffic, and the ViaRhôna, close by, between the two arms of the Rhône river in the municipality of Salaise. The commune is also home to the Platière Island nature reserve, shared with the Isère and Loire departments.

A touch of history

Limony is an ancient settlement site, as evidenced by the many Gallo-Roman remains discovered along the northern Ardèche shoreline. Around twenty finds have been recorded here, including coins, engraved plaques, house foundations, old roads, tombs, remains of columns and old house floors. It was an ancient Roman port. The church at Limony is mentioned as early as the 12th century in a charter from Emperor Frederick I. It was remodelled in the 19th century. Before 1789, the Limony stream marked the border between Forez and the States of Vivarais. A Merovingian cross can also be seen at the entrance to the hamlet of Arcoules.

A zest for the local economy

Limony’s economy is focused on arboriculture and viticulture, thanks to its hillsides, which benefit from the favourable climatic conditions of the Rhône Valley, and 2 controlled appellations of origin, Saint-Joseph and Condrieu. The commune is also home to a number of craftsmen (masons, electricians, etc.) and services in the tourism and catering sectors.
