Joyeuse is a commune in the Cévennes in the Pays Beaume-Drobie community of communes. It is located in the Beaume valley, between Aubenas and Les Vans, in the south of the Ardèche department.

History

The history of Joyeuse dates back to medieval times, the name of the village coming, according to legend, from Charlemagne’s found sword, named Joyeuse. In the Middle Ages, Joyeuse was the seat of a seigneury and acquired regional importance thanks to its regular fairs and markets. In the ^17th century, the town became an important Protestant centre during the Wars of Religion. Joyeuse Castle, dating from the ^16th century, and the remains of the fortifications still bear witness to this rich history.

Joyeuse is located in the south of the Ardèche department, nestling in the valley of the river Beaume, a tributary of the Ardèche. This river contributes to the green character of the region, as well as being a major asset for local tourism.
