The town of Aubenas in southern Ardèche

Built on a rocky spur, Aubenas offers exceptional views over the surrounding valleys, embodying a harmonious blend of nature and history.

With an average altitude of around 300 metres, the town sits on a privileged site overlooking the Ardèche valley, enabling it to play a role as a commercial and cultural crossroads between the Ardèche plateau and the lower valleys. This central location, at the crossroads between the Massif Central to the north and the Rhône plain to the south, has encouraged trade and contributed to the town’s prosperity over the centuries.

This geographical position gave it an important role from medieval times onwards, controlling the trade routes between the Mediterranean basin and more northerly regions. The toponymy of Aubenas comes from the Gallo-Roman term of Celtic origin Albenate, which can be translated as the inhabitants of the place above, confirming its strategic position.

The city’surban planning also reflects its history and how it has evolved over the centuries. The historic centre, with its narrow streets and ancient buildings, contrasts with the more modern districts that have developed on the outskirts. The city’s architecture is a blend of styles, reflecting the different periods in which it was built, from the Middle Ages to the present day.

The climate in Albenes can be described as Mediterranean, with continental influences. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are generally mild with moderate rainfall. This mild climate favours an active outdoor life and allows the cultivation of various local agricultural products, such as fruit, vines and olive trees, enriching the region’s gastronomic heritage.

The town and its surroundings boast remarkable biodiversity, thanks to the variety of its landscapes, ranging from river valleys to limestone plateaux. This diversity of natural environments supports a rich and varied flora and fauna.

History and heritage

The town has a rich and complex history, dating back to ancient times, but it was in the Middle Ages that it really began to take shape. Its castle, dating from the 12th century, bears witness to its strategic importance and rich past. Over the centuries, Aubenas has preserved its architectural heritage, with cobbled streets, bourgeois houses and historic monuments that tell the story of its history.

Aubenas’ current château, with its Renaissance façade, dominates the town and symbolises its historic heritage. In 2024, it will host a contemporary art centre project, with exhibitions and cultural events. It will thus become a nerve centre for the cultural life of the Aubenas basin and the southern Ardèche.

The town is best known for the church of Saint-Laurent, an imposing religious edifice that blends Gothic and Baroque styles, and the domed chapel of Saint-Benoit. The town comes alive throughout the year with traditional markets, music and film festivals and art exhibitions, reflecting its cultural vitality.
