The Gorges de l’Ardèche Community of Communes, in the south of the département, is crossed by the river Ardèche and is home to the famous Gorges de l’Ardèche nature reserve.

With 20 communes and 15,087 inhabitants, the Gorges de l’Ardèche Community of Communes is the most southerly local authority, on the administrative border with the Gard department in the Occitanie region.

Initially created in 2015 around 15 communes, this community has gradually grown to cover an area of 413 square kilometres (km2) with a population of 14,835 in 2015, a density of just 36 inhabitants per square kilometre.

A major tourist attraction in the Ardèche, the region includes the Gorges de l’Ardèche nature reserve, the Chauvet cave site with its famous replica attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, and the Orgnac cave and museum.
