The Ardèche on foot

46 half-day or full-day walks and hikes

Set between the Massif Central and the Rhône Valley, the Ardèche is a land of contrasts and natural gems: the Pont d’Arc, the Chauvet cave, Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc, the Ray-Pic waterfall, the Pont du Diable…

From the high plateaux and Cévennes ledges to the coniferous forests and chestnut groves, from the garrigues of the southern Ardèche to the hillsides dotted with vineyards in the Rhône valley… there’s something for everyone, whatever their pace.

GR 42, from Pilat to the Mediterranean via the Rhône valley

GR® 42 from Saint-Etienne to Grau du Roi

From the peaks of Pilat to the lagoons of the Camargue, the GR® 42 seems to flirt with the Rhône. Sometimes distant, sometimes close, the GR® and the river converse between vineyards and orchards, from the inhabited heights of the balconies to the wild expanses of the marshes, via Tournon-sur-Rhône and Roquemaure.

They finally leave each other in Arles, where the GR® now follows the Petit Rhône, before rejoining the Canal du Rhône à Sète at Saint-Gilles and giving itself over to the Big Blue.

Source and gorges of the Loire

The wild Loire on foot

No schoolchild is unaware of the source of the Loire: Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc in the Ardèche mountains. This famous volcano is the starting point for France’s longest river, but it is also the starting point for the GR® 3, the Loire trail.
This is the first section of the GR®, where the trail follows the still young and wild Loire through the gorges it has shaped on the eastern flank of the Massif Central, from the edge of the Ardèche to the outskirts of Saint-Étienne.
This topo-guide® describes the GR® 3 from Mont-Gerbier de Jonc to Retournac in the Haute-Loire, and the link to St-Etienne station. The description is given both uphill and downhill, so you can start from either St-Etienne or Mont-Gerbier de Jonc (where the Loire is born). The route can be completed in 10 or 12 days. It passes through some of the most unspoilt areas of the Loire river, in particular the gorges de la Loire.

GR 70: The Stevenson Trail

More than 10 days of hiking

The vast volcanic plateaux of the Velay, the rugged highlands of the Gévaudan, the bare ridges of Mont Lozère, the crests and valleys of the Cévenne des Camisards… So many countries, so many landscapes and so many stories; a constantly renewed adventure along the 252 kilometres of this journey in the footsteps of Stevenson, where each day “tomorrow’s journey will take you body and soul to some other parish of the infinite”. (Des promenades à pied, R. L. Stevenson).

The GR® TopoGuide, exclusive to FFRandonnée: a description of waymarked, well-maintained, safe paths; suitable for backpacking over several days; an essential practical tool for preparing your itinerary: stages, accommodation, access, etc.; FFRandonnée expertise combined with IGN maps.

GR de Pays Le Chemin de Saint-Régis

Between Velay and Vivarais

Shout “Régis” in the streets of most towns, villages and hamlets in the east of the Haute-Loire and on the plateaux of the Ardèche… and half the men will turn round! Amazing, isn’t it?

More than 350 years after his death, canonised in 1737, Saint Régis is still a great success! The patron saint of hand lacemakers, he could also have been the patron saint of walkers.

To evangelise in the Velay and Vivarais regions, shaken by the Wars of Religion, didn’t he set off in all weathers on mad journeys across mountains, woods, gorges and moors? Today’s pilgrims and hikers are following in his footsteps, discovering breathtaking landscapes in complete serenity…

GR de Pays Tour du Massif Mézenc – Gerbier-de-Jonc

Where the river is born from the volcano…

Standing proudly above a ring of villages at an altitude of 1,753 metres, the Mézenc has always captured the hearts and ruffled the feathers of botanists, geologists, poets, novelists and journalists, all of whom have found it a haven of peace.

The aromatic, protected flora of the Mézenc is remarkable, with an explosion of violets from June onwards, followed by gentians, arnicas… Raspberries and bilberries are a real treat to eat here!

The young Loire, still wild and sometimes capricious, is a paradise for anglers and nature lovers. Its gorges conceal many protected species, including otters, pearl mussels and the great horned owl.

Mézenc, Meygal and the upper Loire Valley on foot

And to continue from the Mézenc to the Meygal and the upper Loire valley for walks and hikes:

The wild Loire rises at the gateway to the Haute-Loire at Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc. 28 walks in an area of wide open spaces crossed by numerous rivers. It’s an ideal setting for hiking, with landscapes shaped by unspoilt nature and breathtaking views from the heights of Mont Mézenc.

GR7, crossing the Massif-Central through the Parks

The watershed

The Massif Central is the largest of France’s mountain ranges, and the GR 7 runs for almost 800 kilometres along the watershed, a large part of it along the Ardèche.

This guidebook covers the northern part of the route from Mâcon to La Bastide-Puylaurent, continuing south to Castelnaudary. The northern section features a wide variety of landscapes: Mâconnais vineyards, the Lyonnais and Beaujolais mountains, the Pilat massif, the Ardèche mountains and the sources of the Loire.
From the Matagrin tower, you can admire the view as far as Mont Blanc on a clear day.
