La Cantine des Anges, restaurant in Le Cheylard

Walking through the town of Le Cheylard in the Ardèche, along a pedestrian alleyway, I came to the banks of the River Dorne and discovered a small traditional restaurant nestling under pretty ashlar arches.

Sophie in the dining room and Florent in the kitchen welcome you to a pleasant, fully restored setting, the site of the very old Café des Arches.

In summer, a terrace with parasol, facing the river and the road leading to the Ardèche plateau and the Col de Mézilhac, is available for al fresco dining.

Twenty or so covers, that’s the choice they made to be able to run this most delicious of angelic canteens together.

I arrived here one day while cycling along the Dolce via greenway, and this suggestion for a restaurant, which came to me by chance, was a nice surprise.

At lunchtime on weekdays, the Cantine des Anges offers an affordable daily menu , both simple and original, prepared with fresh produce.

The restaurant, one day, one menu

On this spring day, the menu, which changes frequently, is as follows:

The entrance

For astarter, a mesclun salad with diced Cantal cheese and a thin slice of cured ham.

The dish

For the main course, a bit of sea spray on the Ardèche mountains with a fish, hake cooked to perfection, white rice, all served with a light lime and coconut milk sauce.

Dessert

And the dessert, simple and fruity, with a compote of apples and fresh pineapple and a cloud of whipped cream for a sweet treat.

For those who wish, local wine, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, white, rosé or red can accompany the meal.
Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health, so please drink in moderation.

For my part, I was delighted to find Reine des Basaltes, my favourite sparkling water, even if all the waters from the Ardèche are delicious of course 🙂

A delight for the taste buds for less than €20, discreet creativity and a diversity of ingredients for this sincere and natural menu, just like the couple who have been here for 2 years, and much more in Le Cheylard in the Ardèche.
